The Third-Floor Bedroom

It all began when someone left the window open.
I'm pretty much done with my Harris Burdick assignment. Although I do need to rescan the watercolor painting to remove that pesky fold. I hand lettered the text on some tracing paper. I think it turned out alright for such a short term assignment.

I made the image darker than the original and it looks pretty bad on the print though as always.

one step closer to internat fame...

my friend malmal wiegers recently gave me a shoutout on her blahg so I will do the same for her

she made use of my carved stamp font on her book cover design mockups
seen here ala this link CLICK

this was the type card I did for this font several weeks ago, it probably would have worked much better if done in a vertical orientation

anywaaay back to work and avoiding the flu which seems to be encroaching.

oh and p.s. how much does this suck?

My First and Possibly Last Foray into Graphic Novel Making

In our Graphic Form For Illustrators Class we received an assignment last Wednesday to do a one page comic about our day in time for class last night.

Now as I had never even opened a Graphic Novel (shocking amongst the Illustration department) this was a somewhat intimidating challenge.

I struggled to come up with something to do my comic about and tried to think of awkward or embarrassing situations I have been through and settled on doing it about my first and last experience with a professional massage.
I decided to do this on scratchbord ( Ninth Grade Flasbacks anyone?? ) and it turned out to be pretty fun, scratching away the black to reveal white is a sort of backwards way to work but the tactile experience is pretty satisfying.
The result isn't too shabby considering the lack of planning but it could definitely use a lot of work.

I also discovered some pretty cool graphic novels that overcame my mental stereotype of them ( I read like three over the weekend --nerd alert )

Now in this class we've all been assigned one of sentences The Mysteries of Harris Burdick which is a really awesomely illustrated book and an even more interesting story.

Just like the illustrator we are all supposed to illustrate our own interpretation of the mysterious sentences that were left behind by Harris Burdick. Mine is "THE THIRD-FLOOR BEDROOM -- It all began when someone left the window open."

this is the illustration that is in the published book
this assignment is also due on monday, I hope I can come up with something clever in time along with all my other work including my internship application for the summer which I must mail by the end of the week. (and my birthday!!!)

that's all for now.

busy day

I have to make an entire book cover design today for 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, some pen-pal postcards, sketches for a poster design, and oh yes go to class for three hours.

eep.

...
here is one of my final products, I did a couple versions but this one was most popular
it was pretty fun to work with just cut paper, and I got to use my security envelope patterns!

compound word

we were assigned a letter of the alphabet and to choose a compound word to illustrate so it was readable from the image

my letter was 'M'

can you tell what the word is??
give up?? the answer is manpower
at first I had a different design for the wallpaper pattern but decided to use the male and power symbols to make it more literally interpretable.

kind of a weird assignment but fun too

peep show

of a less smutty type

we went to the toy and miniature museum in Mechanical Perceptions class and one of my favorite parts was the victorian peep shows which were basically accordion books in a box with cut outs that displayed a sense of perspective
I made a really quick one about Simon Bolivar last night
